┴˝┴ź╣┘═° is┬ácommitted to┬áeducating teachers┬áwho┬ácan┬áempower┬áIndigenous students┬áto reach their potential┬áin the classroom and┬áprovide a culturally sensitive teaching of Indigenous knowledges and histories┬áto all students.┬á

We┬áprovide┬áspecialised courses inÔÇ»Indigenous education and┬áthe integration of┬áIndigenous perspectives┬áacrossÔÇ»all┬áour┬áprograms,┬áas well as┬áextensive┬áresearch and┬áprofessional development┬áopportunities.ÔÇ»We employ┬áseveral┬áIndigenous-identified staff and work in close partnership with a range of Aboriginal communities,┬áincluding the┬áEastern Suburbs Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (AECG).┬á┬á

We have initiated innovative community-based research projects in Indigenous Education ÔÇô such as theÔÇ»Culture, Curriculum and Community ProjectÔÇ»(CCCP) with the Little Bay Community for Schools ÔÇô to grow and develop our knowledge, and have a growing research program.┬á┬á┬á

Our┬áteaching┬áaims┬áto┬ápromote┬áactive and informed citizenship and┬ásupport reconciliation processes by┬ábuilding┬áculturally sensitive┬áand critically aware┬áknowledge and skills,┬áwhile┬áfostering┬áunderstanding and respect┬ábetween Indigenous and non-Indigenous┬ácommunities.┬áStudents at ┴˝┴ź╣┘═° are offered enriching opportunities to engage in teaching and learning experiences that focus on Indigenous education policy, curriculum and pedagogy during their degree.┬áAs part of their first year, all┬ápreservice┬á┴˝┴ź╣┘═° students undertake┬áa community-based course in┬áIndigenous Perspectives in Education┬áwith┬áIndigenous perspectives┬áembedded in every course in their program.┬á┬á

Nura Gili Preparatory Education Program

░Ň│ˇ▒­╠ř┬áfor undergraduate students is an alternative pathway program for Indigenous students into study at ┴˝┴ź╣┘═° School of Education.┬á

The program involves a 3.5-week intensive course to provide students with a structured introduction to university. In Australia, Indigenous StudentsÔÇÖ university retention and completion rates are much lower than non-Indigenous students. This program is part of ┴˝┴ź╣┘═°ÔÇÖs commitment to improving Indigenous education outcomes, allowing students to get a feel for university life and establish a support network prior to commencement.

Nura Gili, in conjunction with the School of Education at ┴˝┴ź╣┘═°, has developed preparatory programs, open to Indigenous students who are looking to explore and apply for entry into undergraduate degree programs offered at ┴˝┴ź╣┘═° in the area of Education.

Pre-Education Program

The program includes:

  • an introduction to teaching
  • academic literacy and classroom interaction
  • how students learn
  • the social context of schooling
  • Indigenous perspectives in education.

Venue and accommodation:┬áThe programs will be held on ┴˝┴ź╣┘═°ÔÇÖs Kensington campus and accommodation is provided on campus in student college facilities.

Who should apply?┬áAll Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who are seeking to qualify for entry into Education at ┴˝┴ź╣┘═°.

What does it lead to?┬áSuccessful completion of a Pre-Program may lead to entry into an undergraduate program at ┴˝┴ź╣┘═° or a pathways (enabling) program.

Cost: The programs are free of charge.
